When To Use Images In A Web Design
It might seem odd to even wonder about using images in today's image-centric web design world, but the fact that images are so often used does not mean that all web pages are automatically better off with an image. It is important to ask whether the content on a web page actually needs to be supplemented with a picture. If the addition of imagery does not have an effect on what the page is communicating to readers then probably the image is better left out.
Some ideas are difficult to convey in words alone, and if describing what something looks like would take hundreds of lines of text, which could be replaced simply by using an image, then it makes sense to use one. The problem with pictures is that when they are effectively redundant, yet the designer includes them because there is a feeling that, without them, a page is somehow lacking and might appear dull to visitors. If the chosen image or images are cliches of stock photography, then there is a risk of making the web page seem bland, maybe even vacuous, and certainly cliched itself. With a little more care, and by selecting a more interesting and beautiful image, and restricting its use to only a situation where it adds to the text, the overall quality of a web page can be improved.
At internet marketing company Click Consult, we are careful in our use of images and we always make sure that they will enhance a web design rather than detract from it.
