The Importance Of The Home Page In Web Design

The function of the home page is often misunderstood, which can lead to it being presented poorly. An internet marketing business may mistakenly see the page as their ‘shop window’ and be tempted to stuff it full of goodies when its true purpose is more as a ‘foyer’, welcoming visitors and enticing them further into the site.
A cluttered home page, where the site owner is determined to showcase every aspect of their business, results in a cramped feel. This is unlikely to persuade visitors to linger, let alone navigate within the site. A more minimal approach should be employed, where there is just enough content to convey the basic points about a website. The words chosen should also interest people and intrigue them so that they want to read on.
Although the presence of a logo may be crucial for the home page, size does matter, and it is not necessary to sacrifice large amounts of space in order to display a huge image. A more elegant approach, where the logo fits into the overall web design in a streamlined manner, will be easier on the eye while still making the brand recognisable to visitors.
Web development strategies for navigation use the home page as the point from which visitors embark on their journeys around a site. For this reason, there should be enough information present for visitors to understand where they can go next, and why they might want to do so.
