Good and bad points of website graphics

September 8th, 2009 by

Website design evolved and became more intricate as the Internet grew. With each new innovation it became possible to add glitz and glamour to website design. Everyone grabbed new and interactive technology to make websites stand out.

This changed web design to the point where websites today are a far cry from those plain and simple websites of the 90s. But there is a problem with all the scope now available for web design.

Far too many people want to use everything available and use it all at once. This has led to some pretty awful websites that are irritating, not user friendly and lumbering. Business is too competitive for anyone to drive site traffic away through overwhelming displays of graphics.

Find balance

Large graphics slow down the loading time of a website. People are not interested in waiting around for your cumbersome graphics to load. They click off and go find what they are looking for elsewhere. Internet users come to websites to find information. If your website information does not need specific graphics for descriptions and visuals, do not use them!

Graphics, when used should make a statement, should not simply be there because you want to look cool. The use of many and multiple animated graphics makes a website look amateurish. Animated bullets are old-fashioned, outdated and cause a distraction to visitors.

You as the website owner have the final say in what is or is not included in your web design. This holds true whether you DIY or have your website professionally designed. Look around at the websites of your competitors and see what they offer their site visitors. You should always aim for balance in your website’s graphics.

  1. A study published in the journal Behaviour & Information Technology showed it takes less than 50 milliseconds for an Internet user to decide if they like a website. Volunteers rated websites based on aesthetic appeal and their brains had made conclusions within a 20th of a second. Their judgements were made almost as quickly as their eyes took in information.

Thank God there are still some decent sanctuaries left for internet privacy havens. You don’t have to be doing anything shady or crazy to simply want your privacy back.
