What to watch out for when designing a website

During the planning you must first define the purpose of the site with respect to your business's goals and the target audience. Research is essential here. Then you need to define the functions to be included on the site to attain the purposes of the website.

This leads to planning the look of the website. Take user friendliness, appropriate use of content, images and plug-ins into consideration. Ensure that content is informative and relevant and images or plug-ins are used only to demonstrate a point. From there onwards come the technicalities.

A computer, Internet connection and email address is a must have. Then you will need a domain name and a reliable hosting company to host your website. If you plan on doing online sales, you will need a merchant account processor, payment gateway and a shopping cart to accept online payments. This can usually be done via a Paypal account.

Web design is usually via web design software. There are many different types of software available if you want to design the site, or alternatively you can hire a web designer to do the job for you. Some popular software includes Dreamweaver, Coffee Cup and Illustrator. These will allow the optimization of layout, navigation bars, use of colours and graphics; download time, font types, font sizes and readability.
