To the annoyance of everyone in the web design arena, web surfers have evolved into an unruly and remanding collection of individuals. While it's tempting to screw up your static HTML pages disgust at this news and do nothing to increase their experience while on your website, there are some glaringly obvious benefits to bowing to your reader's every whim – namely, profit and revenue.
Images and video are all the rage and citizen journalism means live footage of virtually every event is available from various sources online. If you aren't able to provide your own then make the most of it, ask for readers to submit their footage (the concept behind citizen journalism), and legitimately use other people's non text based content to buoy your own offering.
Dynamic design has also become the choice of many a website visitor. Rather than, or as an addition, to static text based content, visitors want dynamic design elements such as Flash. It brightens up the pages and generally makes a website more entertaining and better looking.
Interactive applications such as blogs and various web based software applications offer functionality and even encourages other websites to link to your own pages. Obviously they need to be relevant to the topic of your site and they don't have to be particularly complex but they will prove effective.
Site users demand more and if they receive more they'll be a more active member of your online community. Better looking sites that offer dynamic design elements and interactive software typically attract more visitors, gain more links, and generally perform better so you will reap the rewards for putting in the effort.
