It is important to plan your website design well

June 2nd, 2009 by

In order to avoid time consuming and costly errors, it makes sense to plan your web design project very carefully. Take time to plan exactly what you need in your website. Consider your audience and target markets and make sure you define the purpose of all of your content.

The purpose of a website is your first step in planning. Your purpose statement should show what you hope to accomplish from your website and what your users will gain. Your audience is identified and the kind of content needed will be revealed as you plan.

Set short and long term goals which will help you plan for future expansion, modifications and improvements. Set measurable objectives to help identify and track your progress so that you can determine how successful your website is.

Your audience are the people who actually view your website for their own specific reasons, so it is important to know what it is they are looking. It is also important to create a website which will attract your type of audience. Take into account some characteristics common to your audience such as what information they prefer, what their computer capabilities are and what experience they have in navigating around a website.

This will allow you to create an effective website which is able to deliver your message or product to your audience.

Content is another important factor and is reliant on a clear purpose. Collect necessary content and arrange it according to your audience’s needs. Gather information and eliminate anything which does not support your purpose or that does not accomplish your audiences objectives. Test your content on a focus group first, then organise the basic structure by categorising it according to user needs – identified through your testing feedback. Each category should be concisely named with descriptive titles as these will become your links.
