How to Avoid falling Victim of Web Design Scams
January 2nd, 2009 by Click Consult
Web Design scams are becoming more and more frequent and the only sure fired way is to design and develop your own site, but if you cant then do not use anyone who offers their services over the web; you need to be able to meet with them face to face.
Do not pay anything upfront without assurances, references, contracts and having done your homework, and don’t trust online payment methods like Pay Pal, the person you are dealing with must be able to supply you with bank account details which can be traced. You also need to be able to trace their business address. But this still does not eliminate the risk.
What are Website Scams?
Scams are about someone offering services for payment, then not supplying them. One company who currently advertises their skills in web design is very deceitful. They outsource your work to freelancers, paying them very little, and then bill you exorbitant fees for this work.
Using this type of outsourcing will not guarantee that your site will be what you are expecting or even if you will get it. Once they have supplied you with a few pages, you will find communications with them starts tapering off, until you cannot reach them anymore.
This is one way scams work, but remember if someone is offering you the moon, it is probably too good to be true, so you need to get a legal an binding contract written up which includes payment terms, work completion dates, maintenance and hosting capabilities as well as methods of raising issues. Paying upfront for a complete site is not good practice.
If you are being offered free things like domain names or web space, move on to another company.
