Study Reveals Fascinating Facebook Trends
Back in February Amaze released the first phase of results from a study they are currently carrying out on children aged between 10 and 15. The research is designed to analyse how young people, or 'digital natives' as the survey calls them, interact with internet technology and is set to continue for five years.
The study is designed to examine a variety of different factors related to internet technology, such as the impact the internet has on their social lives, and what technologies they use. The initial set of results revealed that three quarters of the study group used Facebook, with twice as many boys using the social network as girls.
Further evidence also emerged supporting the theory that young boys are more active on Facebook than girls. For example, boys were three times more likely to update their Facebook status daily, while girls had more interest in observing updates and interacting with them by performing actions such as using the 'like' button, or commenting.
Another interesting fact that the study revealed is that Blackberry is the most popular brand of mobile phone amongst the generation in question. This is likely to be because of the BBM instant messaging service and the Facebook Update function that allows users to update their status directly from their handset. This is despite the fact that R.I.M, the producer of Blackberry handsets, are alleged to be in decline due to the prominence of the smartphone giants, Android and Apple.
The reason that this study could impact internet marketing professionals is that it suggests a possible trend that young internet users are becoming increasingly polarised because of their gender. This could potentially further impact how search marketing campaigns are strategized, and more specifically how social-media marketing impacts its target audience. Let us know your thoughts, do you think this study will impact the way you use social media?
