Google maps and geo-targeted keywords
July 30th, 2009 by Nick
The question often being asked lately is whether geo-targeted keywords are still as important in your search engine optimisation campaign as Google maps make things so much easier for searchers now. The answer is an emphatic yes; you absolutely need geographic keywords for your business. To understand why, put yourself into the shoes of a searcher. Computers store cookies so if you search for doctor, Google maps will show up your local doctors, or dentist or hospitals.
Whatever search criteria you put in for a generic word such as these, your cookies will tell the search engine that you are searching from a specific location. Now, you as the searcher go to another city or country on a trip and do the same search because you want local services at your present location.
Your cookies will tell the search engines that you are at your home location. So unless you specify the local geographic keywords you need, Google maps will not work to the extent you want.
Cater to everyone
Geo-targeted keywords are not just for the people living in the town or city where your business is situated. This is important because local searches will make your business show up through Google maps yes, but people from outside the local search area also do searches.
Another reason for geographic keywords is because not every type of business will automatically activate the Google map function when people look for information about that specific business type.
The reason any business optimises their website is to have the most visibility online that is possible – and that is why so many companies bring in a good SEO agency to help them reach their goal. Geographic keywords make your business far more visible than if you choose not to use them. No business can afford losing potential customers because they can’t be bothered with geographical keywords.
