Social media is constantly developing and increasing in significance for search engine optimisation. With sites such as Facebook and Twitter increasing in popularity in a continual upward trend their subscriber numbers continue to grow. Google has been quick to spot this growing trend and is working hard to take advantage of this fantastic online marketing platform and has started to add real-time twitter feeds to the search results pages.

Recently the link between Twitter and Google has moved a step closer with Twitter announcing the recent launch of its very own advertising platform. This new development will operate in similar way to Google’s Google Adwords and ads that relate to certain search phrases are to be displayed alongside the search results.

For those businesses that have based their business model around the Twitter social networking site, the addition of paid advertising on Twitter will certainly change how they operate and they may feel they are being sidelined out of the search results.

It was an obvious business move for Twitter to take steps to cash in on their growing user base and this addition to the site should be no surprise for SEO professionals. The launch was held at Chirp - otherwise known as the Official Twitter Developer Conference - and now everyone is waiting to see if this new advertising platform will be a success. For those using PPC on Google they may need to look at advertising in Twitter too.
