Using Directory Links For SEO Link Building

November 19th, 2008 by

Directory links are often described as being useless for the purposes of SEO link building because the search engines are believed to have largely devalue them. Whether this is entirely true or not remains to be seen; even though it is likely that Google has removed some of the weight offered to directory links there are websites that feature very prominently for competitive terms that seem to use just directory submissions as their solitary method of SEO link building.

Directory submission do represent a quick and simple way of generating links for a website so even if they only offer a small amount of benefit they can still be used to provide benefit to an SEO campaign. Looking beyond SEO for Google, other major search engines place less effort into the rationalisation of your link profile meaning that directory links are likely to offer greater value in these search engines. It is true that Google enjoys the greatest market share of online searches but it would be dangerous to completely ignore the other indexes completely.

Link building for SEO requires that you find good, reliable, and consistent sources of inbound links for your website in order to help you achieve the best possible search engine rankings. Directory submissions may have had to endure some negative press in certain areas of the Internet but the fact remains that many websites still quite clearly benefit from a prolonged campaign of directory submissions so they may still offer SEO value to your website.
