How To Use Links Pages

January 13th, 2010 by

There is an ongoing debate about links pages and how they affect SEO on websites.  Using links pages appropriately can help your search engine optimisation dramatically but incorrect use can have an adverse affect and can actually reduce your rankings. The following article looks at the dos and dont's of link pages.

If you do have a links page here are some things you should always do:

- Make sure you link to relevant websites.  For example if you are a website selling cars then a good link would be to car manufacturers.  Linking to irrelevant sites will have a negative outcome with Google

- Always check your links.  You must always ensure that the sites that you are linking to are not classed as ‘link farms’ by Google.

On the other hand here are the things you should avoid:

- Do not link in to the big directories such as Yahoo! directory and Dmoz

- Keep the number of links limited.  Choose around 20 of the most relevant and quality links in your industry and list them on a page.  If you use more than one page for your links page you could lose rankings.

- Avoid links pages that are site wide.  Make sure you link only to those link pages within a website that are relevant.  Avoid linking to any links that don’t relate to your site as this will again damage your rankings.
