Geotargeting: Location, Location, Location

July 14th, 2010 by

Geotargeting, short for geographical targeting, is an Internet marketing technique where a website can display information relevant to the geographical location of the visitor.

The targeting takes place before any content is sent to the user – on the server. The server requests the user’s IP address and checks a database of worldwide IP addresses. The database is used to identify the country, or even the city, the user’s IP address is from; enabling the software on the server to decide which content to send.

Geotargeting is important in terms of web marketing. Any form of advertising is potentially available to users all over the world. If you have a campaign that targets a particular country, or region, you can use Geotargeting to help ensure that the message only gets to visitors from those areas. Creating region-specific announcements is another possible application of this technology. If your website promotes a music group, for example, the website could be tailored to show region specific information on album releases and tour dates.

With some fairly straightforward programming skills, an SQL database, and a database covering worldwide IP addresses, you can start making the most of Geotargeting. The code used is simple enough – it reads the visitor’s IP address, looks it up in the IP database, and from the information there works out what country or region the IP address is from. At Click Consult we can help your business make use of every the most efficient marketing techniques, so there’s plenty opportunity to improve your online advertising and start generating some region specific content for a worldwide audience.
