Don’t fall into the two most common SEO traps

September 30th, 2009 by

One of the best forms of gaining online traffic for your website is through search engine traffic. Unless your brand is a huge household name, people are going to search for you through your keywords; this makes your search engine traffic invaluable for your business.

There are many mistakes people make with search engine optimisation. Certain ones, such as using black hat tactics, can get you penalised heavily – or worse, you could get banned from the search engines. Two of the top mistakes that are easily avoided cause endless problems for website owners, so they are worth discussing.

Easy street is a myth

Website owners know how vitally important links are for online success, so getting as many links as possible will do the trick, no matter what the type of links or where they come from. This is a huge mistake that has caused many websites to lose their ranking and credibility. It is not the huge number of links that are good.

It is the quality and relevance of links that count as part of the search engine algorithms. Stay away from links from unrelated websites; you need to build links from websites that are relevant to your own topic. The other method people too often still try is using software programs to bring massive traffic to websites.

It may take the search engines a few months to find out what you are doing, but rest assured, the SEs will find out and combat the effects of software programs. All you achieve is a few months of artificially boosted ranking and then it will come crashing down. Get your ranking by putting effort into it, or you will face penalties.

People may find your site by searching for keywords rather than your company name but the value of optimising for your business name or brand should not be underestimated.

Building awareness of your brand will help the rankings for your keyphrases so should be considered as part of the overall SEO campaign.
