Using Long Tail Keywords

November 20th, 2008 by

To put it simply, long tail keywords are those highly specific keywords that occasionally crop up in your server data logs or website analytics as having produced a visitor. Individually they may only ever receive one or two visitors but when considered together they can generate a lot of traffic for the pages of your website and the traffic that they do generate tends to be highly targeted providing you with a very beneficial source of visitors for your website.

While it is virtually impossible to optimise for long tail keywords in advance, the writing of good quality content for your website will inevitably lead to the inclusion of some long tail keywords and once you start to see traffic generated through these four or five word phrases you can begin to form a clearer picture of the terms that other surfers are likely to use when they search the Internet for the kind of information, service, or product that you offer on your website.

Long tail keywords generate excellent traffic but they are difficult to optimise for. Certainly, because of the levels of traffic that they generate, they won't show up when you use keyword research software but you can get a better understanding of the long tail keywords for your website by closely monitoring your website analytics and raw logs. Create pages using the long tail keywords that show up; you may never get another visitor from that particular keyword but you will invariable create other keywords that are equally as beneficial.
