Search Engine Optimisation: The Principles Of A PageRank 10 Website
January 6th, 2009 by Click Consult
There are very few websites out there with a PageRank 10. Having spent a little time doing some research on Google, a lot of the sites that were listed as a PageRank 10 are actually a PageRank 9 as of January 6th, 200 – for example, www.nasa.gov, www.bbc.co.uk and www.whitehouse.gov. The only PageRank 10 sites I came across today were www.usa.gov and of course www.google.com!
A PageRank 10 is the Holy Grail of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). For a website, a PageRank of 8 or 9 is like being Superman amongst the general human population. A PageRank 10 would be like being God Himself. When you think of the websites that are awarded the prestigious 9 or 10 ranking, it seems that providing impartial information and being a distinguished non-profit institution is key.
Take the BBC website, for example. Why does this site have such authority with Google? For one thing, the BBC is renowned and respected the world over. It is an organisation that doesn’t answer to shareholders and doesn’t rely on advertising revenues to stay operational. Despite it’s recent string of shameful scandals, this gives the BBC an air of authority, which you wouldn’t find on commercial news sites. Perhaps this is why it is given such credence by Google in the World Wide Web.
So what is the SEO lesson for millions of mere-mortal websites with less impressive PageRanks? Well, as the PageRank algorithm is a closely guarded secret (it is often said that only 3 people know how the trademarked PageRank is calculated – Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and God), I can only broadly muse on what it takes to be a perfect 10. For Google’s cream of the crop websites, however, there does seem to be a few basic principles.
Vast name recognition and a global brand that has been inflated over many, many years is one such principle. But perhaps the most distressing principle for every average Joe who has the 'Search Engine Optimization for Dummies' book and a dream is this: websites that provide valid information are ranked much higher than websites that seek to make money.
