Top Spot Or Lower?

October 20th, 2008 by

When considering PPC bid management you will need to consider whether to vie for the very top spot in the sponsored listings or whether a lower position will prove more profitable. While it is certainly true that the top PPC positions will be seen by more eyes they can prove to be prohibitively expensive because there is more competition for these placements.

Generally speaking, the higher an ad is placed on a page the higher its click through rate is likely to be. Click through rate is important for a number of factors. As well as combining with search volume to determine the number of potential visitors you will receive from your ad it is also used by some PPC networks in order to determine what percentage of the bid price you will actually need to pay for each click.

Appearing lower down the PPC rankings can prove the more profitable choice. Clicks will cost less and for the more heavily searched keywords they can still generate a decent level of traffic to a web page. Obviously, the lower your ad position the less traffic you are likely to gain from your advertising.

Changing PPC ad placement can increase traffic levels and it can also be used to decrease the total amount you need to pay for each click received. Monitoring results and acting on any changes is an important part of good PPC and because bids and positions change regularly it is important to keep on top of bid management.

More information on bids and ad positions can be found in the First Page Bid Estimate blog.
