Pay Per Click Positions

January 16th, 2008 by

During my time as a dedicated pay per click account manager one thing which stand out as difficult to achieve is predicting how an account is going to perform.

The amount of the research that goes into building a good pay per click campaign can be a lot of work. From the keyword research, looking at what traffic you want to visit your site to estimating how the size of budget will effect on a given campaign.

One of the hardest things to predict as a pay per click manager is which position on the search engine results pages are going to work best for a client’s website.

There are so many different variables to take into account:

•    What industry your business is operating in?

•    Keyword that user is searching on

•    Competitive nature of the industry

•    Commitment it takes to achieve a conversion

•    What type of traffic the client wants

As a general rule, if you are purely looking for volume of traffic then the best position to be in is 1 and then of course 2. Positions 3 and 4 historically are better in terms of conversions, while lower down on the first page is considered useful should your client be advertising in a market considered to be heavily browser orientated such as the furniture industry. We have had clients in the past with really good conversion stats in positions as low as 7 and 8. One theme seems to be prominent throughout. There is nowhere else to be other than the first page.

As ever, each client is individual and it takes careful research and development of an account to fully understand what works best for your industry.
