Google Changes Its Gambling Policy!

October 16th, 2008 by

There has been a change to the AdWords gambling policy. Google AdWords will now allow online gambling ads targeted to Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) as long as the advertiser is registered with the Gambling Commission and provides a valid operating licence number.

Why the change of heart from the “Don't Be Evil” Internet giant? Could it be that the credit crunch and the economic downturn is taking its toll even for Google. I mean, there are thousands of online gambling searches on Google every day, and, because PPC ads aren't allowed for gambling queries, Google make zero money from all that traffic.

Perhaps the biggest point to make is that this represents a huge opportunity for UK betting companies with an online presence. As we speak, when someone searches Google for “online gambling”, no sponsored link ads appear. So whichever gambling company hears this news first and gets their PPC campaign up and running first, they will have a massive amount of traffic (and punters who want to open a new account and make a deposit) all to themselves. This represents a big – if short lived – strategic window.
