Google Branded No.1
July 22nd, 2008 by Mike
Google was today voted number one consumer brand in the UK in a survey undertaken by 2200 consumers. It has pushed 'Microsoft' down into 2nd place while Mercedes moves down to third.
This will only serve to strengthen Google's already dominant position in the UK marketplace. Recent stats show Google's share of UK searches is now up to 87%, 90% if your include Google’s search partners. With Microsoft’s paid search avenue down to 4% and Yahoo suffering the same fate, there would appear no way back in the battle to compete with Google.
In my opinion, a proportion of this traffic shift will come down to the bad press that Yahoo has been getting over the past few months. Takeover rang lings and news reports of an internal power struggle at board level have no done Yahoo any favours. Add to this that Yahoo have trialled serving Google ads and it’s not hard to see why users are defecting away.
Google recently also topped a poll of “superbrands”. The Superbrands Council is a group of marketing, advertising and media experts. Members of the council put together a list of over 1,000 brands according to quality, reliability and distinctiveness and this was passed on for consumers to judge on.
What is more amazing about Google’s feet is that they do not actually sell any products directly to the consumer. In fact their main avenue of attracting people is for them to take advantage of free online search engine.
This latest news can only serve to strengthen the industry on online marketing which still is only really in its infancy. In the months and years to come, any business which fails to take advantage of this will in my opinion will be left behind.
