The Marketing Angle For Press Releases

Press releases are a marketing tool. There’s no doubt about that. The thing is that they’re most often used to promote events. Whether it’s about a product launch, a re-branding effort, or the release of a new study, a press release generally advertises your company in a roundabout fashion.
At the same time, the few online press releases out there that jump directly into advertising really miss the point of a press release. The format is not suited to direct marketing efforts. Press release readers don’t appreciate it. An online press release has to promote you in a subtle fashion.
This might make it difficult to promote your product or service, but not impossible. Companies that are fixated on the event angle of press releases are missing out on an excellent chance to create buzz about their interests.
Don’t get blindsided by ‘press’ part of press releases. Their history is as event advertisers, but online they have a much broader scope. The only thing a press release really has to do is look like a news story. This means that whatever angle you take, it has to sound like news. ‘We sell shoes’ is not news, but ‘20% more women are wearing high heels’ is.
