It is wise to keep in mind that when you are writing a press release that it publicity you are after and that you are trying to get the attention of reporters and editors.

Your online press release should emulate a news story because if it looks like an advertisement it will not cut the grade and will probably stop there.

Criteria

A successful online press release will list important news or important facts. It will be written in the same font found in any news story and will contain the Who, the What, the When and the Where.

The body of a press release will contain interesting and important information as well as background to the facts and the data needed to support it. It should include relevant data and relevant quotes which have to be from credible sources and must be attributed to these sources, do not plagiarise.

It will explain why your company or product has the solution they are looking for and must contain information as well as benefits, it can also include something personal which will be of interest to them. Filling the bulk with additional data and interesting items is nice, but not that important. And all available contact details must be listed.

Writing a press release differs from that of writing an essay or a short story. The writing should be in short sentences and contain very few descriptive words and those words should be simple with sentences and paragraphs kept short.  Include a headline grabber fact which is immediately related to your subject.

Importantly, research your information or data and be prepared to back it up if necessary.
