Talk about press releases and many companies and individuals are put off by the distribution aspect of their use. Press releases are most commonly used by journalists, or in the case of online press releases they are used by other websites and new media publishers. Very few of us have a powerful and extensive list of people that would be interested in a press release in this way but fortunately, distribution services do exist.
The Internet has a number of distribution options available. Journalists know of the major wires that regularly publish new releases and have usually signed up to receive the latest news. The very biggest PR services are even used by major online news networks like Yahoo and Google news. In these cases, the release are picked up and published verbatim with no changes or amendments made.
Some paid services will also approach journalists and news organisations in a bid to further promote the press releases they serve. Again, this can prove especially fruitful for gaining more and more exposure for your piece. There are many distribution services available and the biggest challenge will be finding those that offer what you want.
There are a couple of very similar, standard formats for press releases that you should follow. Most services will refuse to accept a release that does not abide by their own take on this format so check the site for details before submitting. Also, some services are free while others are paid services and the difference in performance will often depend on the industry you operate in and the topic you are covering in your release.
