The goal of a press release is to attract favourable media attention and encourage journalists to write about your company, thereby exposing you to the consumer.
Press releases may be published in trade magazines, newsletters, websites, community and national newspapers or it may be discussed on television or radio.
Via these mediums you are exposed to a much larger audience than what would walk pass your shop door or visit your website.
Using a good distribution channel
It is likely that your company focuses on a certain industry, if you produce lampshades you might focus on the decor industry or a piano tuner will focus on the music world.
By distributing press releases to a wider array of media you can benefit from exposure to other markets. The piano tuner can find new clientele in publishing a story in a community newspaper or an online antiques website. The lampshade producer might find a new market by having a story in a hospitality trade magazine.
While you may have the contact details for some media related to your trade, it is unlikely that you have an extended, up to date and detailed database with all relevant media details.
Many public relations companies offer distribution services where they send your press release to your targeted audience and beyond. Apart from expanding your brand exposure to different markets, you can also expand your exposure into new geographical areas.
With online trading it is now possible to explore new geographical markets and increase your client base.
