A press release may be defined as information considered to be newsworthy that is distributed to the media for the purpose of announcing or publishing it. What makes press releases different from many other marketing functions are that they are delivered through very credible third parties.
Press releases are published online, in e-mail newsletters, in newspapers or magazines or they may be announced and discussed on radio or television. The success of a press release is related to the news, it must be interesting or the media will not pay much attention to it.
It must be well written as it is often copied for use in the print media and a poor written press release will reflect poorly on your company. Another very important factor is the distribution list, should you not have sufficient media clients it is recommended to make use of a company that can distribute you press release to the media.
Why customers respond so well to press releases
Many forms of marketing are delivered directly from the company offering the product or service. Brochures and advertisements are all a message directly from the company and the consumer expects the message to be of a positive and convincing nature.
Apart from client testimonials and referrals, press releases are one of the few marketing functions delivered via a third party. The media is usually seen, as a trustworthy source of information and it is a great platform to showcase achievements from.
Well-written and factual press releases are not questioned by consumers and increase the confidence in your company tremendously, leading to increased consumer awareness and ultimately increased sales.
