Fixing Email Typos

Every email marketing list has a number of addresses that bounce back emails due to typing errors. It’s a problem that everyone encounters. On the most part, all you can do is remove the email address from your online marketing list. In some cases, though, the error is simple enough that it can be corrected with a quick fix.

For example, some of the most common errors in email addresses look like simple typos, e.g. writer@yhaoo.com rather than writer@yahoo.com. A simple letter switch would fix this, giving you access to another customer. It seems foolhardy not to fix such errors, but some marketers advise against it.

Fixing the errors in your subscriber’s email address can seem like a good thing, but it can have a negative outcome. Sometimes these errors are deliberate, and an indication that the subscriber doesn’t want to be found.

What you should do

If your email marketing material continues to be bounced back from a certain address, it’s a big sign that the owner doesn’t want to receive it. Forcing them to look at your emails isn’t going to help your business. Talk to our team at Click Consult about the drawbacks of forced internet marketing.

Some web marketers recommend that you don’t fix mis-typed email addresses, as this is an invasion of the subscriber’s privacy. There is a strong case for fixing these addresses; after all, the subscriber went to the effort of subscribing, and didn’t bother to make up a false email. In any case, it’s important to give your subscribers the option to unsubscribe.
