Buying And Renting Email Marketing Lists

October 14th, 2008 by

Email marketing provides a unique opportunity to have your marketing message displayed in front of potential leads' eyes within their email inbox. This is a unique and beneficial opportunity because email is a very direct approach and well written email marketing messages can attract an excellent conversion rate, especially with a prolonged and sustained effort. However, building an email marketing list can prove difficult especially for new websites with very little traffic.

Buying and renting lists allows website owners to quickly gain access to list members. While care should be taken when selecting a list broker or list provider, using the right list can instantly provide masses of names and email addresses. The most important consideration when either buying or renting a list is that all members opted in to receive communication from relevant third parties. If members did not opt in in this manner then you run the very real risk of having emails blocked and countless other problems further down the line.

When buying lists also ensure that the members are interested in topics relevant to your own. You may need to consider your own target market in this respect and look at the groups of list members that are on offer. For example, if you offer a service or product that is relevant to business executives then you should find a list that includes details of executives. Business to consumer services may want to consider geographical location, salary range, or any of a number of other demographic features when selecting the most appropriate list.

  7. Renting email list or outright purchase of email data from list brokers and respected wholesalers is not without its challenges. There is no question that you need to know the source site from which the data has been collected. Some things to keep in mind when considering using outside emails for prospecting is:

    1. Relevancy–If what you offer is not relevant to the subject or concept of the source site for the object list…don’t use it. Prospecting email is not for the faint of heart. It usually requires sending a campaign of messages (3+) to cultivate trust and ultimately convert.

    2. Deployment–Do not try to deploy a rented or purchased email on your own. You will most likely get yourself into a heap of frustration with the ISP’s (Internet Service Providers). Especially true if you are intending to use a Consumer email list.

    3. Choose a Deployment vendor that can demonstrate to you that they know how to properly deploy prospect mail. For example, Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, MSN (the major Free internet service companies) all have their own rules on deployment speed. You can send a perfectly deliverable and compliant email out too fast and the mailing can blow-up.

    4. Email lists are not cheap. Avoid Bulk email like the plague.

    5. Make sure that your Subject Line is relevant for the recipient. I’ve ssen some folks that will put the geography they are sending too, the Subject of the message and their company name into the subject line. This is an art, and not a science.

    6. Make sure your advertising message conforms to basic can spam compliance.
