Always Ask Before Buying Or Renting Lists

August 28th, 2008 by

A good email marketing list can often propel a site's online marketing to new dimensions. Drive traffic to a website and, as well as directly selling products and service son the pages, you can collect details of interested visitors using capture forms and incentives. Alternatively, or to give your marketing a kick start, you might also consider the purchase or rental of a list but there are certain questions you must ask before you start.

Every member of an email list should have opted in to receive communications like the one you will be sending. In the case of your own list this is easy enough to manage because you're in charge of every step. Before you rent or buy a list of emails ask the question of whether that list is an opt in list. Once the email has been sent it may be too late to undo any damage.

When using a well established list broker or list owner you may also want to enquire about how the list has performed in the past. At the very least enquire about the efficacy of the list provider. Different websites use different methods to create the lists they sell and, as you might expect, some methods are more beneficial than others.

There are also certain questions you should ask especially when renting a list or using a list service. Most services will not hand over the specific details of list members in order to protect their own commercial interests but it pays to ask the question before you consider purchasing or renting.
