A Content Management System (CMS) offers any website owner or Webmaster the opportunity to add their own pages, edit existing content, and add new elements to individual pages. As a CMS uses a template and the CSS file for the site, it literally only leaves the addition of the content and the pressing of the submit or publish button. Some CMS include in-depth WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) interfaces to make them even more intuitive and simple to use.

A WYSIWYG interface not only allows you to add textual content but it can also include the option to add images, video clips, audio clips, and even scripting. It usually offers formatting buttons so that you can properly format the content you add over and above the CSS file that was created during the website development stage.

Blogs are a good example of how a WYSIWYG interface would work in CMS based website development. Fields exist so that you can add your own titles, descriptions, and the body content for the page but should you wish to add other elements the option to do this also exists.

Web development comes in various guises. A CMS is most beneficial for sites that will be adding or updating content on a regular basis. The site owner or content provider can be provided with a log on and then add content whenever it's required. The graphical interface also enables the user to alter formatting, change the content, and add further content elements.

A Content Management System, or CMS, enables anybody regardless of their technical expertise to add content to a website. Depending on the CMS used it's possible to have various levels of membership including writers, editors, and admin roles. In terms of website design and maintenance, a CMS completely separates the addition of content from the design and structural aspects of developing a website.

Without a CMS, websites rely on templates and adding each page individually. In some cases this can mean calling on the developer each time a new page is to be added. Using a fully featured CMS negates this need and enables the quick addition of content. The CMS uses the existing page template ensuring a uniform design is evident throughout the website without the trouble of having to edit every page's code.

A CMS is a web based application so anybody with Internet access and the appropriate permissions is able to use it. Because many websites outsource the creation of web content elements, the CMS allows a more flexible approach to this outsourcing process.

Permissions based access can often be granted at numerous levels so that content writers can add content, editors can then review and accept that content, and administrators can manage the overall process. Alternatively, full access can be granted to individuals so that they can immediately add content to the site. A CMS offers continuity of design, secure access, and the ability for anybody with any level of technical expertise to add fresh content to a website.
