Working with your competitors through Affiliate Programs

January 23rd, 2009 by

You might be surprised to learn that you can do business with, and make money from your competitors through your affiliate program. In fact you probably do business with competitors without realising it.

You can also learn more about them and be better able to judge whether or not they are indeed a competitor, and also how big a competitor they are.

How does it work?

Quite often a client will buy products from both you and from your competitor so it makes sense to team up. Not only can you advertise a larger group of products, but you can both lean on other for support, information and skills while driving visitor numbers up. By referring and recommending visitors to each others sites results in profits for you both.

Two schools of visitors are attracted to your site, potential Customers and competitors. Your goal is to have customers click through your affiliate link and purchase your product because this is how you earn money. However having competitors do the same may actually hurt you if they start promoting any of your products on their own website.

Investigate what your competitors are offering their customers and what you can offer them in addition to that and decide how you can both profit from each other. There is a saying that ‘two heads are better than one’ and this definately applies when you are thinking of making a deal with them.

Open negotiations by approaching them professionally. You might even end up as part of each other’s affiliate program and they will no longer qualify as a competitor.
