Internet marketing as a whole is a great way of branding and generating income, however, many choose to do affiliate marketing instead of any other form.

Affiliate marketing is a type of Internet marketing, which rewards affiliates for encouraging visitors to a site. Affiliates will usually get paid for the actions done by the visitor, whether it be, signing up or buying a product, so performance of visitors is vital. It is usually intertwined with other forms of Internet marketing as it uses advertising tools such as SEO, e-mail marketing and display advertising.

Merchants choose affiliate marketing mainly because it uses a pay per performance system as oppose to pay per click and risk is divided amongst the merchant and affiliate. The affiliate is only paid if an action is made on the merchant’s website meaning that just because an affiliate drives traffic to a site it does not necessarily mean they are paid.

This way, in the event of a visitor just visiting a site and not transacting, merchants do not run the risk of paying the other party commission without receiving any revenue from the traffic.

The main way in which money is made through affiliate marketing is the promotion of a product. An interest in the product is key in guaranteeing success.
