What Is An Affiliate Network?

April 21st, 2009 by

What is it? The aim of an affiliate network is to act as an intermediary between your affiliates, or those people who publish on your site, and ‘merchant affiliate programs’ allowing publishers an easier method of finding, joining and generate income from affiliate programs that suits them. Affiliate networks also offer affiliate programs that can reach larger audiences because they promote their program to all publishers who paritipate in the affiliate network.

Benefits of Affiliate Networks

Most merchant programs offer a revenue share model. Traditionally affiliate networks allow these merchants the ability to generate a share of their revenue to anyone who visits the publishers site, or to those who complete a required action while visiting their site.

Merchants especially benefits from affiliate networks because they include technology like tracking and reporting tools as well as processing payments. They also offer access to large pools of publishers.

For publishers, or affiliates, the benefits gained include a simple process of registering on one or more merchant programs. Affiliates also have access to tools like reporting and aggregation payments and they have the added bonus of being able to join an affiliate network for free while merchants generally have to pay. Depending on the type of network a merchant joins this will consist of an initial set up fee and recurring membership. Merchants are also charged a percentage of the commissions they pay to the affiliates.
