Many businesses view affiliate marketing as an easy, low cost solution to selling their products and services. The main incentive for any person who has a sales based business is the commission and they will therefore use a promotional method that will maximise their level of sales. As a merchant you have to monitor how the affiliate promotes your products and services as any adverse sales methods will reflect badly upon your brand.
There are many methods of making more sales that are not ethical, such as sending spam emails. This practice is not tolerated but many marketers believe that by sending out thousands of emails to random email addresses they will get some recipients who will actually click through to their websites and make a purchase. As email is a low cost tool, there is no huge cost associated and the only party who will suffer is you as it is your merchandise being promoted.
Some affiliates will also use false advertising to lure a visitor to their website, perhaps advertising products cheaper than they really are. This will lead to complaints and again, your brand will suffer. The majority of affiliates are honest and hard working, using ethical methods of promotion to make sales. However, the small percentage who are not ethical can ruin your business and must be monitored closely which will take up a considerable amount of time.
