Web Hosting Glossary Terms: Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is a term that has been used a lot in recent months and years, primarily because we are said to have entered the phase of Internet evolution that it refers to. Where web 1.0 was accepted as being the widespread introduction of the commercial Internet and the text based sites that were considered cutting edge, web 2.0 is the advance of the Internet to offer much more dynamic and social elements to websites and the web as a whole.

The social web is certainly alive and kicking with social networking and social bookmarking sites among some of the most popular web presences in the world by some considerable way. Traffic levels for these sites seems to keep increasing and for the website owner this points to two important factors – social websites offer access to a lot of traffic, and offering your own social website can provide you with a slice of the impressive amount of action.

Offering your own dynamic social website elements may not be as difficult as you think. You don't need to establish your own Facebook or MySpace. Even smaller and very simple social elements such as bookmarking buttons and other social buttons can be considered beneficial forms of web 2.0 marketing. As well as offering your own social elements you need to consider the benefits of becoming involved in some of the web 2.0 websites that have sprung up all over the place. A lot of your target market will be resident on those sites and will log in very regularly to get involved.
