Open Source software can be used to provide website owners with an affordable method of developing and offering a dynamic website. By its very nature, open source software is free to use, dissect, and often even distribute. Unfortunately, because it is not commercial, it also means that for most website owners the software code requires some alterations so that the application provides exactly what is required.

There are many open source web applications and by using one as a basis for your web development, it is possible to save a lot of money and time during the web design and web development stages. Most web developers are able to locate and amend these applications to bend them to your exact needs.

Some applications that provide back end administrative functions can be used exactly as is once they have been installed on your server. Content management systems, shopping carts, and blog platforms are among the more popular types of open source application that used without alteration and many allow the website owner or web developer to make changes directly from within the software itself.

The open source movement is a strong one and new applications are frequently added, updated, and upgraded. While they do provide a source of free software, they are often used as a very strong basis for the creation of bigger, better, and more personalised web applications making them a very beneficial consideration in any web development project.
