If you're managing your own e-commerce based website then you will need to make a decision of which shopping cart software best suits your needs. A good shopping cart allows for the display and sale of multiple items categorised so that visitors find it easy to navigate to the items they want. More advanced features can include related items or similar items display boxes and advanced customer account management features.

Always ensure that the shopping cart software you choose is compatible with your host web server. Different types of shopping cart rely on different frameworks and while some hosts may offer these as standard, and may even allow for the simple installation of the shopping cart, others might require that you activate a particular programming language or may not support it at all.

You should also ensure that the shopping cart supports the payment options that you wish to offer. Some carts are built with specific payment gateways and processors in mind, while other more modular applications allow for the addition of many different payment options. If you intend to accept PayPal, WorldPay, or another online payment processor be sure that it will be supported by you shopping cart.

Shopping carts are essential to the good performance of an ecommerce website. Even those sites only selling one or two products can benefit from the reporting and automated features offered. More recent advances in shopping cart options mean that service providers and consultants can also utilise specialist shopping cart programs.

A popular misconception is that shopping carts handle the whole financial transaction but they only really act as a front end which passes information via secure connection to a payment gateway – a separate service altogether.

  2. Edward Says:

Shopping cart scripts are written in many different coding formats – PERL, PHP, ASP just to name a few. Be sure to check with your host before purchasing a program. If you opt for a remotely hosted service, then it won’t matter what programming language the cart software is written in it.
