How To Use Links Pages

posted on: January 13th, 2010

There is an ongoing debate about links pages and how they affect SEO on websites.  Using links pages appropriately can help your search engine optimisation dramatically but incorrect use can have an adverse affect and can actually reduce your rankings. The following article looks at the dos and dont's of link pages. If you do have a links page here are some things you should always do: - Make sure you link to relevant websites.  For example if you are a website selling cars then a good link would be to car manufacturers.  Linking to irrelevant sites will have a negative outcome with Google - Always check your links.  You must always ensure that the sites that you are linking to are not classed as ‘link farms’ by Google. On the other hand here are the things you should avoid: - Do not link in to the big directories such as Yahoo! directory and Dmoz - Keep the number of links limited.  Choose around 20 of the most relevant and quality links in your industry and list them on a page.  If you use more than one page for your links page you could lose rankings. - Avoid links pages that are site wide.  Make sure you link only to those link pages within a website that are relevant.  Avoid linking to any links that don’t relate to your site as this will again damage your rankings. At Click Consult we can provide more tips on SEO and help you to fully optimise your site.

Optimising For Long Tail Searches

posted on: December 31st, 2009

There are two standard ways to optimise your site to accommodate long tail searches.  The first method ensures that you stick to the key principles of search engine optimisation.  This means that you need to ensure that inner pages are fully optimised in order to deal with long tail searches.  Review the linking on your internal pages. For example, is your children’s birthday party page set up as children’s-birthday-party.html?  Has the main title been set up as ‘party’ or is it ‘children’s birthday party’?  Check if the phrase has been used in the meta title and that have you got enough content.  Don’t fall into the eCommerce trap of have mainly images on the page, you’ll need to incorporate good quality content so that Google is able to crawl and rank your page. By building the website with these points in mind you’ll find your SEO will result in higher rankings for specific long tail searches. The other way of attracting long tail search visitors is to set up your website to cater for ‘question searches’ such as ‘Why does my Ford Fiesta keep stalling?’  To attract this type of traffic, set up a forum or a blog.  This will encourage visitors to post this style of question on the site which will in turn attract people searching on the main search engines. Long tail searches can increase your rankings with the search engines.  For more ways to improve your search engine optimisation campaign and increase your site’s rankings speak to us at Click Consult.
