Understanding Link Spikes

posted on: March 4th, 2010

When it comes to search engine optimisation, links are a significant element to any campaign. In fact, in the internet arena, links are the be all and end all.  Over time the amount of links that point to a website will gradually grow, rising steadily.  Over a year there tends to be a natural progression.  However, if you were to experience link spikes things would look very different. What are link spikes? A link spike is pretty self explanatory.  It shows a massive increase in the amount of backlinks to your website up over a relatively short amount of time.  If it was charted on a line graph you would see a steep spike in volume. Search engines will be drawn to your site if they see a link spike.  It can actually wave a red flag as link spikes tend to be an unnatural phenomenon in the SEO world. Unnatural link spikes can happen where a product is sought after on a seasonal basis.  For example, if a website sells grass seeds there are likely to be a surge in backlinks at particular times in the year.  If the link spike however does not coincide with the current trend in searches for grass seeds it will be viewed as an unnatural link spike.  This can cause your website to be penalised by the search engines, which can end in a reduction in ranking or even a ban from the indexes. At Click Consult we can guide you on all SEO issues to ensure your rankings remain high in your web marketing campaign.

What Is The Difference Between Keyword Frequency And Keyword Density?

posted on: March 1st, 2010

When managing your search engine optimisation you may think that keyword density and keyword frequency are one and the same – but you’d be wrong.  The length of article gives the distinction. If you write an article that has a key phrase containing three words in an article of 100 words then your keywords make up 12 percent of the content.  If the same phrase is used in an article of 400 words, four times, then there is just a three percent keyword density. How does keyword frequency affect rankings? The greater the keyword frequency the better your page will rank for a particular phrase in general.  Google gleans information about your website via the words used, and also the links that are pointing to the site.  The use of keywords can then help to rank you higher. However, eventually Google knows what a particular page relates to and if you keep using a repeated phrase it can look suspicious.  This is where keyword density comes in. How does keyword density affect rankings? Using a keyword four times in an article of 100 words is not as good as using a keyword four times in a 400 word article. The former would be looked upon as keyword stuffing in your internet marketing campaign.  This is known as spam practice and you may be penalised by Google.  Keyword density can actually affect rankings negatively. You need to pay attention to your writing and ensure it is natural. At Click Consult we can advise you on all aspects of search engine optimisation.
