Using Directory Submissions To Build Links

When building off page links to improve search engine ranking, it's important to get a strong basis of good links. This means a range of links from topically relevant and related pages. While some may not offer the same kind of advantage that they once did there are many that can still be helped to use your search engine optimisation efforts through link building.

Both category specific and general topic directories exist and both offer their own general advantages. General directories attract more traffic and are known to be relied upon more by search engines to help them create the basis for generating their indexes. Topic specific directories, however, can also generate very good levels of direct, targeted traffic as well as a powerful link.

When building any links, especially using directories, one of the more important factors is ensuring that they are search engine friendly links. This means that spiders should not be prevented from following the links and that links are well categorised and properly formatted without the use of nofollow or noindex tags.

Pages that include hundreds of outbound links do not offer the same value as those with very few external links. Directories do tend to have a lot of links on their books, because this is the nature of a web directory. Ensuring good pagination and the use of categories and sub categories should ensure that you still receive decent value from each of the links you do generate using web directories.
