Pay per click is a form of internet marketing based on search engines and advertising websites that targets the target audience and charges the advertiser when the audience clicks to enter the advertiser's website.

This form of Internet marketing has been around for quite a long time, but where did it all begin?

Origins of the PPC marketing concept

PPC originated through Goto.com by one of its employees, Jeffrey Brewer in 1998. He presented his PPC search engine concept in California where the Technology, Entertainment, Design conference was help.

Following this presentation the PPC advertising system was born. However, despite Brewer's efforts, the credit for the PPC advertising methods went to Bill Gross who was the founder of Goto.com.

Goto was later converted to Overture Services and was the first to combine the various elements that led to PPC. Some of these include:

•    Advertiser website and contents display
•    Advertiser paying for the advertisement
•    Checking to see that the advert and the advertiser's website are related and genuine
•    Matching the advertiser's site to that of searcher's search terms so that the relevant information is displayed
•    Displaying of the advertiser's advert and contents in the order of relevancy to search term
•    The documentation of clicks to charge the advertiser

Later on, due to losing the dominant search engine war (in which Google prospered), Yahoo! took over Overture in 2003 seeing that it had potentials and renamed it to Yahoo! Search Marketing. Later on PPC was adopted by Google, Ask.com and MSN.
