Social media is a unique form of interaction which requires a different strategy when it comes to marketing. When businesses first realised how valuable social media networks could be for promotional purposes, the first major mistake they made was to employ traditional marketing techniques to get their message across.

Needless to say, traditional marketing forms do not work in social media. Social media networks work on a person-to-person basis. Confronting them with traditional marketing methods is the equivalent of shouting advertising babble in someone's face at a party.

The kinds of press releases that work in social media are slightly different to other online press releases. While a company press release might fare well when it comes from the company website, such a business-focused idea will fail on a social network. Social media users read items that are of value to them. Social media press releases need to take the focus off business.

A good press release for social media will be devoid of marketing terms and full of information. They will have a target in mind, and offer some interesting bits of news with no strings attached. Writing in this way will establish trust and encourage viewers to pass the press release on, generating some SEO-juice along the way.

The most effective press releases are always those that carry a business message within an attractive article. Online press releases for social media are more like articles than anything else. The main idea is to make the piece as free of business motive as it possibly can be, nurturing trust in your readers.
