The Ins And Out Of Getting A Good Press Release

It is easy to fall into the trap of using an online press release purely for marketing purposes. Although a press release serves as a marketing tool it should not include any direct marketing and should only include the newsworthy new development, event or achievement that you are writing about.

The correct format

The first and most important part of a press release is a strong headline. Make sure that it draws attention and provoke interest. Write your press release on a word processor with good grammar and spelling, proof read it before submission to make sure you are satisfied.

Make sure that you use paragraphs and avoid the use of exclamation marks; this falsely creates hype that will affect the credibility of a press release negatively. Never include your contact details in the body of the press release, these can be added at the bottom.

Any good press release must include the five W’s: what, where, why, when and who. These five fact should form the basis of your release, to be enhanced with illustrations and examples. Keep your story factual without being overly verbose, keeping it interesting.

It is important to write in the active voice rather than the passive to ensure that your press release is exciting. Should you include any quotations, make sure that you have permission from the parties involved before publication, it is wise to keep written permissions on file.

Your press release should end with a company profile briefly explaining the services or products you offer and a short history.
