There are several ways to approach online press release distribution. The manual method, which is the most labour intensive, requires trawling through industry websites to find relevant sites that publish press releases on their pages. The automated route involves a single or very small number of press release distribution services or news wires in order to do all of that work for you. Combining these two methods may prove the most effective for your site.

Press releases are used by different groups of people. Journalists, including new media journalists, use press releases to form larger and more in-depth pieces. When using the content of a press release they also include contact or name details of the press release subject.

General topic news sites like Google News and Yahoo News publish pieces collected from all over the Internet including several of the more effective distribution sites. For popular topics these can generate a lot of interest and they, in turn, are used by other sites looking for content on a particular topic.

Industry based websites are other websites that operate within your industry. They may require the publication of press releases in order to offer more relevant information to their own readers and this can provide the unique opportunity to advertise your contact details on your competitor's websites.

The distribution of press releases can be the trickier part of online press release marketing because of the range and quantity of sites that will publish your content. AS with many forms of marketing and the resources associated with them, the best bet is usually to use a diverse portfolio of services.
