The question may be 'how large a part do Meta tags play in search engine rankings' and how much benefit do properly implemented meta tags have on a website's overall SEO?  The answer may vary depending of the search engine itself.  It depends on the changing algorithms each search engine deploys and how much value they place on Meta tags in their ranking system.

Once upon a time, keyword tags had a large impact on a website placement in the rankings, or SERP’s or Search Engine Result Pages.   Today these same little tags have lost their impact on SERP’s and their importance has diminished.  In the good old days, webmasters soon grew to understand the power of Meta tags and used them so often that they became ‘over used’.  When this started happening, search engines started declaring them less important and gave them less value.  It was just not possible to rank every single website using the same phrases with a top 10 spot in their rankings.

But, and there is always a ‘but’.  Not all value has been stripped from Meta tags.  Some search engines till accord them with some importance. A good SEO agency knows how to use meta tags to get the maximum benefit for your website.

If implemented well, as part of a comprehesive on-page and off-page SEO campaign, meta tags can defintely give great benefit to your website's profile in search engine results listings over time.
