The generation before ours came to know Spam as a meat product you bought in tins. Mention the word spam to people today and you will see blood pressures rise fast. Being labelled as a spammer today buys any email marketer more trouble than you can imagine. Email spamming is loathed by all internet users and has given email marketing a bad name.
The problem with spam has led to most countries introducing anti-spam legislation to try and curb this internet menace. It is no wonder that marketers have become hesitant to use email marketing.
The ante has been upped as not only will you get into legal trouble if accused of spamming, people will retaliate against your business. People who feel you are spamming them might send you an email bomb that will clog or shut down your email server.
Keep your nose clean
The worst thing any email marketer can do is use a rented spam list, a targeted spam list or a home-made spam list. These methods are the surest way to get yourself labelled as a spammer. A one-time unsolicited invitation mail is heavily frowned upon and your email normally ends up in the deleted folder. Very few people will easily read one-to-one cold canvassing emails either and often means it goes into the spam filter.
Your future emails will go there immediately. The only form of email marketing that works is getting permission through your in-house opt-in list and people might get annoyed if you mail them too often. Be clever when email marketing. Email marketing is risky and you can dig a huge hole for your business if you are not savvy in spam laws.
