With email marketing there is a difference between spamming and permission based marketing. Buying email lists is a lot easier than building your own. However, this can be considered unethical because email addresses are personal and people would not want their email addresses to be distributed without their permission.
Consequently, this is known as spamming. Thus, for any business the right way to email marketing is through the building of their own email lists with permission from the email address' owners.
Email list building techniques
One of the easiest ways of email list building is through the use of your business website which offers visitors to leave their email addresses should they want to receive newsletters. If this is the favoured method then the key lies in driving quality traffic to your website, which can be achieved through a SEO or PPC campaign.
Another way is by coupling a blogging site and an RSS and email management service (Feedburner). This method allows users to sign up for blog notification and then Feedburner will manage and update the email lists. Therefore every time your blog gets updated, an email will also be sent to users that signed up to your blog.
You have to attract you’re audience with something for their email addresses. The most basic is that information of products would be provided. In addition, discount coupons, mini courses can too be offered. Multimedia use is also a way to attract people from signing up such as the use of videos (through youtube) or pictures. These can be tutorials or informative cartoons which offers both valuable information and entertainment.
