Email marketing is the sending of any marketing communication via the medium of email. One of the most effective types of email marketing message is viral marketing. Most often associated with the sending of humorous or funny emails, viral marketing leads to the forwarding of your email and the increased awareness of your product or message because recipients forward the email to other people that they believe would be interested.

In terms of email marketing, viral marketing can prove highly effective and generates excellent returns on investment for your campaign. While you may send your email to a hundred people, if it goes viral then it may be read by hundreds of even thousands more people that you didn't even send the email to in the first place.

Viral marketing can be performed in a number of ways using various different forms of media. Chain letters were an attempt at viral marketing of one form, and many businesses invest good money in the creation of viral emails because they know just how effective one good viral marketing message can prove.

Viral marketing doesn't necessarily happen by accident, although it can. The provision of email content that is appealing or creates an emotional response in the reader will often lead to it going viral. Offer readers the chance to start the viral ball rolling by giving send to friends or bookmarking buttons within the content of the email. This makes it easier and less troublesome to forward the email and increases the likelihood that recipients will do so.

A colleague and I developed a formula for successful viral marketing, it can be seen at: http://dominiquehind.wordpress.com/2008/08/19/the-viral-formula-what-works/ All clients love viral marketing because they think it is free or cheap. The only thing that is cheap about viral is that clients don’t need to pay for media. The production value needed for something to go viral is usually quite high. The idea is what drives the viral nature of any campaign. Email is one way that viral can be distributed, social networks are another great way to get the campaign out there.
