Opt In And Opt Out Email Marketing

In order to conform to anti spam laws and therefore ensure that all current and future emails reach their intended target it is vital that your email marketing list includes the options to opt in and opt out of future email communications. There is no short cut around this and a failure to demand that list members opt in and a failure to provide transparent and simple opt out instructions will have negative impacts.

When collecting details from your own site, you should ensure that you ask visitors to tick a box that allows you to send marketing communication to the email address used in the future. This permission based opt in box covers you to send emails to your contacts and allows for effective email marketing now and in the future.

When buying or renting lists you need to ensure that a similar practice has been followed during the collection of email addresses. This can be more difficult to manage because you are not directly in control of the actual email address collection. Try to ascertain where the details have come from and consequently determine whether or not an opt in field was included.

Once you have built or obtained a list you should ensure that all email communication includes an opt out or unsubscribe option. Not only should this option be clearly identifiable and easy to find but it should also be simple to follow and complete. Overly complex opt out options can have similar effects to failing to ask members to opt in.
