Large files filled with information about products or services is called a data feed.  Simply, it can be called a database.  File size varies but are rather large, something anyone wanting to use data feeds should be prepared for.  Data feeds require some sort of software program to translate them into information which can be viewed and/or used.

Data feeds contain information which is arranged a table and presented in a spreadsheet which consists of the following:-

•    Records: each data feed is called a record, one for each product.
•    Fields:  Each record, or product, has information which is attached to it and which is found in individual fields.  Some feeds have more than one field name.
•    Field Names:  Something like a heading. E.g. Product Name

Data feeds are delivered in different ways, but usually by a method called FTP, or File Transfer Protocol.  This allows feeds to be delivered directly to your server.  A lot of data feeds are provided free by the merchants while other networks require payment for the feeds you receive.  They may also require that you have a high affiliate performance before they will provide you with a data feed.  Once you have made payment, every merchant that has a data feed is available to you.

What is their purpose?

Their purpose is to promote and better sell products.  They convert into individual products which include descriptions and links amongst other things. Affiliates use information taken from a data feed to build their own pages. An affiliate data feed can increase not only your exposure on the web but that of your affiliate site and merchant’s products.
