Affiliate Marketing Glossary Terms: Conversion

The term conversion could be considered a part of your own website but should also be considered a contributing factor to your affiliate success. A conversion, for the affiliate marketing website, is a visitor that clicks a link on your website and subsequently performs the desired task on the resulting page. With the majority of affiliate marketing programs offering a percentage of sales, this means that a sale on the affiliate site is a conversion.

Once a visitor reaches the pages of your site, your ultimate goal is to persuade them that they need or want the item you are promoting and then to further persuade them to click the affiliate link on your web page and make the purchase. You aren't directly selling the item and this means that your content doesn't need to be optimised to convert visitors to sales, but it should be optimised to pre-sell the item or service being offered. The art of pre-selling can be difficult to master but is the art ion affiliate marketing.

An affiliate marketing conversion is when one of your website visitors performs an action on an affiliate's site that results in you receiving a payment for your part in the action. While most affiliate programs pay a percentage or value per sale, some may offer an amount per registration, a value per click, or a total for any other action that visitors can take on their website. Always ensure that you know the desired action before you promote a particular item.
